Messages Series
The photographs in this series capture uplifting sentiments discovered in public spaces. Some of these messages are part of commissioned murals, while others have a more guerrilla quality. In most cases, the messages are expressed by an anonymous author, and are intended for a general public. Yet, within that context of anonymity, there is an experience of connection that one may find moving. The benevolent intent of these messages - offering encouragement to anyone who happens to walk by - stands in juxtaposition to other types of messages that are more often seen on the urban landscape, such as advertising or graffiti tags. In this way, they create an unexpected, whimsical encounter that just might brighten someone’s day.
